Overview of Alopecia

Alopecia is a form of hair loss that kicks in when your own immune system mistakenly views hair follicles as a threat to your health. This causes the hair to come out, often in clumps. The amount of hair loss is different for everyone and in some cases, it affects eyebrows, eyelashes, and face, as well as other parts of the body. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or a normal part of aging.

Anyone can lose hair on their head, but it’s more common in men. Various causes can trigger alopecia. For instance, systemic illness, genetic tendency, drugs, acute illness, hormonal imbalance, stress, local skin disorder, and nutritional deficiency are some of the causes. The risk of developing alopecia areata is unusually high in people who have asthma, hay fever, thyroid disease, vitiligo (a condition in which patches of skin lose their color, pernicious anemia, and Down Syndrome.

Symptoms of Alopecia

Here are some common symptoms of Alopecia.

Gradual thinning on top of the head.

This is the most common type of hair loss, affecting people as they age. In men, hair often begins to recede at the hairline on the forehead. Women typically have a broadening of the part in their hair. An increasingly common hair loss pattern in older women is a receding hairline (frontal fibrosing alopecia).

Circular or patchy bald spots.
Some people lose hair in circular or patchy bald spots on the scalp, beard, or eyebrows. Your skin may become itchy or painful before the hair falls out.
Sudden loosening of hair.
A physical or emotional shock can cause hair to loosen. Handfuls of hair may come out when combing or washing your hair or even after gentle tugging. This type of hair loss usually causes overall hair thinning but is temporary.
Full-body hair loss.
Some conditions and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy for cancer, can result in the loss of hair all over your body. The hair usually grows back.

Causes of Alopecia

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition. An autoimmune condition develops when the immune system mistakes healthy cells for foreign substances. Normally, the immune system defends your body against foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria.

If you have alopecia areata, however, your immune system mistakenly attacks your hair follicles. Hair follicles are the structures from which hairs grow. The follicles become smaller and stop producing hair, leading to hair loss.

However, it most often occurs in people who have a family history of other autoimmune conditions, such as type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. This is why some scientists suspect that genetics may contribute to the development of alopecia areata.

Hair loss, according to Ayurveda, is caused by excess of “pitta” in our body. Main causes of pitta are higher intake of oily and spicy foods as well as consumption of excessive tea, coffee, and alcohol. Smoking is also a major culprit for abnormal pitta level in our body.

Hair loss may also be caused by anemia, general weakness following a disease, anxiety, stress, intake of too much medication and low blood circulation. Ayurveda also cites hormonal imbalance, chronic diseases like typhoid fever and presence of dandruff as other major reasons for hair loss.

Types of Alopecia that can Affect your Scalp

Here are some common types of Alopecia.

Androgenic Alopecia

This is common for women and men. It’s also known as male- or female-pattern hair loss.

If you’re a woman, it can thin your hair, but your hairline doesn’t recede and you’re unlikely to become totally bald. Women often notice a widening of their part. If you’re a man, the condition often leads to complete or partial baldness. Your genes and your environment seem to play roles in causing androgenic alopecia.

Diffuse Alopecia Areata

Diffuse alopecia areata is also known as telogen effluvium. It’s different from alopecia areata because your hair thins and then falls out in scattered areas across the scalp, instead of falling out in patches. In rare cases, similar hair loss patterns will occur in other areas of the body. Causes include severe stress, sudden hormonal changes, and medication side effects.

Alopecia Areata

This is also known as patchy baldness. The bald patches can show up anywhere on your body, but many people get a round or oval patch on the scalp.

Alopecia areata is a type of autoimmune disease—your immune system attacks your hair follicles by mistake.

Alopecia Totalis

When the entire scalp experiences hair loss, the condition is called alopecia totalis. Like some other forms of alopecia, it appears to be related to an unusual immune system response.

Alopecia Universalis

As its name implies, alopecia universalis is a condition that involves complete hair loss. This includes the scalp and the rest of the body.
